BACKGROUND: Wiki Link
PERSONALITY:
"But it’s not like she was soft. Rukia was tougher than most men I know. She didn’t take any crap from anyone. She even kinda talked like a man."
First impressions of Rukia can often be described as no-nonsense, bossy, and emotionless—certainly while performing her Soul Reaper duties, in a dire situation, or in the presence of her superiors. She has no qualms about barking orders to subordinates, or maybe just those who need the motivation (shouting and kicks to the face are definitely her teaching style, a proponent of "tough love"). Being a mentor, and teaching others, is a role that she is comfortable in. Her extensive knowledge of the Soul Society, and its long history, does help put her in a position of authority to educate and strategize.
The most notable example of this is when Rukia harshly confronts Ichigo, who was struggling emotionally with feelings of failure and inadequacy to protect people after battling the Arrancar. She physically attacks him, verbally berates him, and throws him into a battle with a Hollow in order to knock him out of his rut. Empathy is most certainly not her go-to method of encouragement.
It should also be noted that Rukia, while not born from nobility, was adopted by the powerful Kuchiki Clan during her early years at the Soul Reaper Academy. Her cool composure and extreme commitment to her duties and reputation comes from not wanting to dishonor the name nor embarrass her brother Byakuya, whom she respects and cares for very much.
The natural commanding way about Rukia, and her loyalty to family, is further supported by the circumstances of her childhood, when she had none. Or not in the traditional sense. Abandoned at a young age in Inuzuri, the 78th District of Rukongai, it meant she grew up on her own and had to fend for herself for a considerable amount of time, particularly against adults. Back then, she had no trouble taking command even in a group full of only boys, including Renji Abarai, who soon became her closest friends, ones she truly believed she would be with forever.
All that said, Rukia has a dominant personality. She is detail-oriented and cautious. However, while not impulsive or careless, she does emphasize not hesitating, lest the indecision results in death or failure. Rather, she doesn't condone being reckless or taking unnecessary chances, which is why her keen intellect and extensive knowledge can be so crucial in combat.
"Even if no one believes in you, stick out your chest and scream in defiance!"
Although she deems the laws and order of the Soul Society to be of the utmost importance, there is a point that duty to her friends, and to do what's right, will win over in her choices. Her relationship with Ichigo Kurosaki, and the friendships she made in the Human World, are a testament to her commitment to protecting her friends. When Orihime Inoue was taken to Hueco Mundo, Rukia was determined to do all there was to protect her, even when Head Captain Yamamoto disapproved of the rescue mission.
So while "soft" may not be a common descriptor of her personality, it can be said there is a soft spot in her heart for her friends, family, and comrades—both her greatest strength and greatest weakness. She also possesses a natural feminine appearance and energy, described as graceful and "classy." Even the Zanpakutō she wields has been recognized as the most beautiful in the Soul Society, covered in pure white with a white ribbon forms from the pommel, giving it an even more elegant look. Not to mention its main commands are "dances."
Rukia does believe in the greater good, and many times has been willing to sacrifice herself in order to save the lives of others. During a time when Ichigo and his family were in grave danger, she was willing to commit a criminal offense and transfer her power to him in order to project them. This would ultimately lead to her execution sentence, but even then, she accepted the outcome as a way to atone willingly, even if her friends would not. In the same vein, she also knows how important it is live for others' sake as well. In the battle against the 9th Espada, Aaroniero Arruruerie, who took on the appearance of her former lieutenant Kaien Shiba, who died at her own hands, she would not accept death when her friend Orihime was waiting for her to rescue her, and took Kaien's words to heart that she would not die alone.
Aloof and reserved, with strong convictions, Rukia has trouble opening up to anyone, and tends to keep her emotions to herself. Most of the time, she comes off as a cool and collected warrior, but sometimes she breaks through her the shell. Whether that’s to yell at Ichigo or Renji, doodle adorable illustrations, coo over bunnies, or charm fellow students—depends on the day.
That is not to say that she is entirely unfeeling. The way she is able to be vulnerable, go against the rules, or put her life on the line for her friends is a testament to the number of people she has let into her heart. Rukia may not entirely know it but she is more human than she realizes.
POWERS/ABILITIES: Rukia is an accomplished Soul Reaper, now at a lieutenant-level, who finished at the top of her class in most arts, especially Kidō. (Wiki Link)
- SPIRITUAL POWER. Rukia boasts a great level of spiritual power, and can exert large amounts of it when needed, called spiritual pressure. Along with her own spiritual pressure, she possesses the ability to sense it in other spiritual beings without relying on her five basic senses. Soul Reapers are essentially souls who reside in the Soul Society, and those with high levels of spiritual power can receive training at the Soul Reaper Academy. In game, when her Chroma levels are low, her abilities to sense spiritual pressure can be muted, or give off more a weak signal making it harder to track.
- KIDO. Rukia is one of the more accomplished wielders of Kidō, a form of combat based on advanced spells. The most basic Kidō must be intoned fully before use, and is akin to poetry in its sounding, before finishing with the name of the spell. Rukia is of the second level mastery in Kidō, where she can cast spells with just the name intoned, and she can use them in rapid succession without incantations and still retain considerable control and power. Among her known skills are those for binding, healing, and destruction. In game, this power can be nerfed so that Rukia can not use multiple spells at the same time.
- ENHANCED ABILITIES. Like most Soul Reapers, Rukia can concentrate her spirit energy to enhance her strength, endurance, attack power, and ability to walk on air. Her main advantage lies in her speed and agility vs. physical strength. The ability to move faster than the eye can follow is called Shunpo, or flash step. Experts of the technique are considerably fast, and can maintain high speed movements for extended periods of time. But in game, using it for extended periods of time can considerably drain her Chroma.
- COMBAT: She is capable of hand-to-hand combat, and is able to throw grown men around. Though it's not her greatest skill, and likely doesn't need much nerfing. But like most of her powers, if too much is used it can deplete her Chroma faster.
- ZANPAKUTO: Zanpakutō are unique swords generated from their owner's souls, and its shape differs depending. They take the form of a normal katana before they are released by their name, which is the key to unlocking their power. Rukia's Zanpakutō is named Sode no Shirayuki. Sode no Shirayuki is an ice-type Zanpakutō and possesses multiple techniques, labeled as "dances" by Rukia. Besides ice techniques, Sode no Shirayuki's general ability is freezing. Sode no Shirayuki can freeze a target from a distance, or used in a different manner, create a path or platform of ice in midair. At her current canon point, it's unclear if she has mastered its final form of Bankai, so for the sake of nerfing her powers, she can only release its Shikai. What "dances" she can perform depend again on how much Chroma she is able to expend.
